Matt Hancock “is not useless at all,” said Attorney General Robert Buckland.
Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnson’s former chief advisor, revealed a series of WhatsApp messages between him and the prime minister last week.
One exchange included Johnson describing Hancock as “completely hopeless” while discussing testing at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to Sky News’ Trevor Phillips on Sunday, Buckland said Hancock was “an extremely useful and dynamic health secretary who has our full support.”
When asked “jhow useless “Hancock was, the Attorney General said:”It’s not useless at all.
“I’ve known him for many years and saw him step on the plate during this crisis and work tirelessly for us to make sure our response to Covid, the healthcare response, was as forceful as possible.
“It was a huge challenge for him, a huge challenge for all of us, but talking about such words doesn’t help anyone in my opinion.”
John Bercow, the former House of Commons spokesman who defected to Labor from the Conservative Party, also gave Phillips his opinion on Hancock.
“Well, I think it would be fair to say that I would buy Matt on my valuation and sell on his and make a healthy profit on it,” the former Tory MP told Phillips.
