Two Australian news presenters shared their scathing views on the Novak Djokovic series when they thought they were off the air – only to get the clip going viral on Wednesday.
Djokovic, the world’s number one tennis player, was initially arrested over a dispute over his vaccination status when he flew to Australia for the Australian Open last week.
He then won his appeal in court for entry into the country for the Australian Open after spending several days at an immigration service in what his family said was “torture”.
But there has been a prominent backlash on Djokovic’s treatment as Australia has some of the strictest Covid rules in the world and the tennis player is still unvaccinated.
In response to Djokovic’s statement about the dramatic consequences, presenters Mike Amor and Rebecca Maddern discussed the issue openly, apparently unaware that it was still being taped for Australia’s Seven Network.
Speaking to 7News Melbourne with a large picture of the tennis player on the screen behind them, Maddern began: “Any way you look at it, Novak Djokovic is a lying, devious asshole.”
When she questioned the mistakes in the tennis player’s visa application – which Djokovic accused one of his employees – she added: “It’s unfortunate that everyone else around him has been stuffed.”
Djokovic is being investigated because he did not specify any other trips on his travel declaration form – although recordings of him in Spain in December emerged.
Djokovic also requested a medical exemption from Australia’s Covid vaccine mandates by claiming he tested positive in December.
He has since admitted that he actually agreed to attend an interview, knowing he was suffering from Covid at the time.
Maddern continued: “Going out when you know you are Covid-positive – well, I don’t even think he was Covid-positive …”
Cupid added, “One fucking excuse and then he fell over his own fucking lies.”
Turning his attention to the way the Australian government and immigration authorities treated Djokovic’s arrival in the country, Cupid said, “I think he will get away with it.
“[He’s] an asshole – [but] did you do the right thing of him?
“No, they screwed up.”
Maddern said, “I don’t think putting him in an immigration hotel did any good.”
Cupid replied, “No, I don’t think so. But the problem is how do you justify a person who is on the same level as those who are … “
“The fact is, life is never fair,” Maddern replied.
Amor then expressed sympathy for “the poor Czech girl who was fucking sent home”, presumably in relation to tennis player Renata Voracova, who was taken away on arrival in Australia last Thursday.
She left the country days later after her visa was canceled. She used the same vaccination exemption as Djokovic.
Craig McPherson, director of new and public affairs for Seven Network, said an investigation is now underway into how the footage ended up online.
The tennis tournament, the first Grand Slam of the year, is scheduled to start on Monday.
